In small companies a java developer gets somewhere around 10,000/- 15,000/- but if you get a
 chance to work with biggies like TCS, Wipro , Infosys then they would pay you 25,000/- to 29,000/- as a
 fresher. I also believe that learn just java and dont go for .NET , after learning it try to make
 1 project and also include its description in your resume. 
This will give you an edge as compared to others. 
Remember first concentrate more on core java. After doing it give SCJP exam which will showcase your credential. 
Along with java you should also have sound knowledge of Database so learn oracle 10g etc .as well.
